Could Common Core Standards Be Bad for Education?

Lots of kids are heading back to class this week, and in most states, the curriculum will look quite different this fall, as Common Core Standards are introduced. While the Common Core is intended to help all students learn the same Language Arts and Math curriculum, many critics and public school advocates are worried.

BlogHer Kelly Wickham at Mocha Momma, a long-time educator, is really concerned:

I didn't poo-poo the system right away, but gradually found myself distrustful of the system when I realized where the money was coming from and who has a vested interest in this. It's yet another systemic breakdown of the American Public School system whereby the constant narrative loudly proclaims "failing schools" that will lead parents to the for-profit charter school systems that are already being set up and have been for years. When vouchers didn't take hold like politicians wanted, they came up with something new.
